Freethinkers of Colorado Springs
August Monthly Social
4820 Topaz Drive
~5:00 pm to ~9:00 pm
Come and enjoy good food and great conversation with other Freethinkers!
Mark your calendar; socials are on the second Saturday of the month.
Bring a dish to share, bring your spouse and/or friend, and bring a bottle of beer or wine or whatever you’d like to drink; coffee and tea are provided by the host(s). Socials usually begin at 5:00 pm and break up around 9:00 pm. The July social will take place on Saturday, the 9th, at the home of Barry Weinhold. His address is 4820 Topaz Drive in Colorado Springs.
To get there from North Academy Boulevard, turn east on Austin Bluffs Parkway; be sure to stay in the left lane. At the third traffic light, turn left onto Park Vista Boulevard. Go one short block and turn left onto Pearl Boulevard; then take the second right onto Topaz Drive. Go one-and-one-half block on Topaz, passing Garnet Drive on the way, and 4820 will be on your left. It is tan stucco, with dark brown trim and a brown courtyard wall in front. There’s a parking area behind the house, parking in front and on the street, plus overflow parking at the next house north. You can enter through the front door or the patio door in the back. (Use the front door if you’d prefer to enter without stairs.) Please leave the circular drive for our mobility-impaired members.
It should be warm enough to enjoy the large deck or other outdoor areas, and to avoid the latest COVID variant, please bring your mask for extra safety.
We’re returning to a house-based social where real cooks get to show off their talent with a favorite dish. Or buy your favorite pizza from a take-out joint, or some items from your store’s deli, and head to Barry’s house. Home-based dinners give us the ability to mingle freely, meet more people, and grow our individual bonds as a group. We usually get twenty to thirty people at these events. Lots of our regulars don’t bother to RSVP (on Meetup) but we really wish you would. It shows “first timers” that there really will be more non-believers like them at the event.
But the main topic here will be the food. Great desserts, imaginative salads, and some plain old simple ones. Casserole dishes are appreciated with their rich blends of flavors and textures. Consider putting the dressing on the side for the purists who really like vegetables! By the way, these sessions are called “Potlucks” because you never know how great a dish in a given pot might be until you try it. Sometimes you get lucky. If you’re a great (or even an aspiring) cook, tape your name to your pot, or place a card near it, so people can congratulate you and beg you for the recipe (if you used one). If you are a recipe-user, consider bringing a copy (or your book) and allow people to copy or photograph it.
Call 719.531.5149 if you get lost or need assistance, and don’t forget to bring a dish to share and something you’d like to drink!
REQUESTED COVID MEASURES
Our August Freethinkers Social will be on the 13th, starting at 5PM. And by "popular demand" from our members, and the threatening Fall COVID revival, we will be asking everyone who attends to show their COVID vaccine records, including "booster" doses. Or they could email pictures of those document to Gary@FreethinkersCS.com or to GBetchan@usa.net. On that same line, we ask that anyone who has tested positive for COVID in the last 10 days, or who has recently been having flu like symptoms, NOT attend this meeting. We haven't found a case of a guest at our events contracting COVID before, or after an event, but with the rapid growth of variants, many people want to follow the science of the medical community and reduce risks. Feel free to bring, and maybe wear, a mask if that feels comfortable to you. Thanks for complying with this request. Please call Gary at 719-659-5075 if you have questions about these COVID measures.
We usually get 20 to 30 people at these events.
