Equal Justice Under Law - at least in California - at least for now

Molly Ivins wrote, "It is possible to read the history of this country as one long struggle to extend the liberties established in our Constitution to everyone in America."

History may one day recognize the August 4, 2010 Perry vs. Swartzenegger ruling in the US District Court for the Northern District of California...

What is scarier than gay high schoolers openly attending prom? Letting "atheists" pay for the prom cancelled to prevent it.

Many Americans take pride in the idea that their nation is the pinnacle of equality and freedom - even as they look down upon organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) who are willing to to the difficult and often unpopular work required to ensure America actually conforms to these ideals.

Inequality is Undeniable and Equality is Irresistible

High level government bodies in an increasing number of states (such as Iowa and Vermont) are affirming that allowing one group the benefits of [insert action here] while simultaneously denying a different group access to [insert same action here], constitutes prima facie discrimination – and is thus unlawful.

Several "Don't believe in god? You are not alone." billboards erected by the Coalition of Reason have suffered apparent vandalism during a 14 month, 16 city campaign.

UNITED WE STAND - AT LEAST ON ONE ISSUE APPARENTLY

Despite the perception that American Citizens are universally divided against themselves, there do appear to be things that most Americans agree upon. For example, it appears that American citizens of virtually every political point of view agree that America's ubiquitous system of financing campaigns with “donations" not only appears in conflict with the United States Constitution’s most basic ideals, but also creates the appearance of - and opportunity for - bribery.

Religious Expression in American Public Life

Available through The Brookings Institution website, Religious Expression in American Public Life: A Joint Statement of Current Law could be a useful tool for anyone interested in remaining free from government intrusions into personal beliefs - or lack thereof.  Unfortunately, representatives of non-believer groups were apparently not a part of the drafting process.

"Amatuer translators" find a conservative point of view in the Bible

Led by the son of 'longtime conservative activist' Phyllis Schlafly, a group of cooperating amatuer translators have have somehow discovered a conservative point of view in the Bible, challenging some 1700 years of accepted linguistics.

Sometimes you have to sue for equality under the law...

It took an ACLU lawsuit for freethinkers to get equal time in Arkansas.

"LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A secular display celebrating the winter solstice and "freethinkers" such as Albert Einstein and Bill Gates can be placed at the state Capitol alongside a traditional Christian nativity scene, a federal judge said Monday."

Federal Appeals Court Goes With 'God'

Michael Newdow at work...

'Before every oral argument in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, a court clerk tells everyone to draw near and give their attention because the court is now sitting. The opening cry ends with the line "God save the United States and this honorable court."'

God's Banker

In a widely commented upon recent interview by the London Times, Goldman Sachs’ Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein stated, “I’m doing God’s work.”

If we are to give Mr. Blankfein the benefit of the doubt regarding the apparently rather hubristic point of view regarding his work, it is important that we identify how investment banking relates to the kind of work that alleged gods do.

The Ultimate Product - by Groff Schroeder

While religions offer many things, perhaps the most attractive (and apparently least likely) thing they offer is eternal life.

No one wants to die - yet everyone does.
