The debate statement is: Resolved: The phrases “one Nation under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” on U.S. currency violate the Constitution. This is Dr. Chris Leland's fifteen minute opening presentation. Dr. Chris Leland is the executive director of College Student Ministries for the Focus on the Family Institute. He is also the senior fellow for Christian Worldview Studies and founder of Focus's college website, TrueU.org. A former university professor, he earned his Ph.D. in political communication from the University of Oklahoma, and is currently writing a book on Christian worldview called Truth Be Told: Making Your Worldview a Way of Life

Are We "One Nation Under God?" -- Question for Dr. Michael Newdow

Focus on the Family got to ask Dr. Newdow one question. That question was: "What do you realistically predict for an outcome of your current challenges to the pledge and national motto given the fact that the supreme court has several times over the last forty years stated that such ceremonial references to god are all properly constitutional and which, quoting former justice and liberal icon William O. Douglas, 'run through our laws our public rituals and our ceremonies.'?"

The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs got to ask Dr. Leland one question. The question was: "The pledge of allegiance was intended to be a show of national solidarity. It is meant to unify our nation. Our nation includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, pantheists, agnostics, humanists, and atheists. How does keeping 'under God' in the pledge unite all American people?"
