US Centers for Disease Control information regarding preventing the spread of COVID-19

The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs accept points of view verified by engineering, logic, mathematics, and science and advocate the use of reason, defend the separation of church and state, and support interpersonal dialogue, non-violence, human rights, civil rights, reproductive rights, and equality for all.

In this context, please remember to remain "safer at home" by minimizing time spent in public settings, wearing a respiratory mask when in public settings, maintaining social distance, and washing your hands regularly (especially after returning from public settings).

Please also review the scientific and public health information below, which should be useful in protecting yourself, your family, and your friends during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please note that this page will be updated as new information becomes available.

Why Preventing the Spread of COVID-19  is Important

Altough the death rate associated with COVID-19 may appear insignificant, in a pandemic environment, danger to society stems from the possibility that the capacity of already heavily utilized public safety and hostital systems could be overwhelmed with an exponentally growing number of infected individuals needing medical assistance.

Plesase review the information below about preventing the spread of COVID-19 at the United States Centers for Disease Control link blow.

It appears that with regard to Freethinkers of Colorado Springs operations, the CDC'S guidance regarding "social distancing" may have the most salience.

Social distancing means remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others when possible.

New, Scientifically Detailed Information about the COVID-19  Virus

A recently released study regarding COVID-19 (technically "H-CoV-19") awaiting peer review prior to possible/probable publication in the New England Journal of Medicine states (emphasis added),

"Abstract

HCoV-19 (SARS-2) has caused >88,000 reported illnesses with a current case-fatality ratio of ~2%. Here,  we investigate the stability of viable HCoV-19 on surfaces and in aerosols in comparison with SARS-CoV-1. Overall, stability is very similar between HCoV-19 and SARS-CoV-1. We found that viable virus could be detected in aerosols up to 3 hours post aerosolization, up to 4 hours on copper, up to 24 hours on 36 cardboard and up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel.

HCoV-19 and SARS-CoV-1 exhibited similar  half-lives in aerosols, with median estimates around 2.7 hours. Both viruses show relatively long viability on stainless steel and polypropylene compared to copper or cardboard: the median half-life estimate for HCoV-19 is around 13 hours on steel and around 16 hours on polypropylene. Our results indicate that aerosol and fomite transmission of HCoV-19 is plausible, as the virus can remain viable in aerosols for  multiple hours and on surfaces up to days."
