Greetings from the Freethinkers of Colorado Springs Board of Directors!

Thank you for visiting our site.

The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs (FTCS) work to advance the use of reason and defend the separation of church and state, and believe that freedom of religion includes freedom from religion.

The FTCS was founded in 1993 as a social organization and religion-free support group in response to Colorado's infamous "Amendment 2," (see http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_laws7.htm for the full text and analysis).  Amendment 2 sought to prevent gays and lesbians from seeking or achieving any "protected status," "minority status" or "claim of discrimination" and became part of the Colorado Constitution by 54% to 47% in a referendum.  An injunction filed by Colorado municipalities, civil libertarians and gays and lesbians prevented the amendment from taking effect, and state courts, the Colorado Supreme Court and finally the US Supreme Court found that Amendement 2 violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution

The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs publishes the almost-weekly "Freethought Views" "advertorial" column in the Colorado Springs Independent, and offers a haven to freethinkers in Colorado Springs, providing educational and social opportunities to individuals and families skeptical of fantastic religious claims such as life after death.  The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs often finds itself as the only (or one of a very few) local voices defending the Constitutional principles of freedom from government promoted religion and infringement of the right to free exercise of religion (including choosing not to participate) outlined in the first clause of the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs publishes the almost-weekly "Freethought Views" "advertorial" column in the Colorado Springs Independent, provides community, educational and social opportunities, and offers a haven to individuals and families skeptical of fantastic religious claims such as life after death.  The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs is often the only (or one of very few) local voices defending the Constitutional principles of freedom from government promoted religion, regularly opposing infringements upon the right to free exercise of religion (including skepticism and the choice not to participate) outlined in the first clause of the First Amendment to the US Constitution.

We welcome your input, comments, membership, participation, queries and yes, even proseltyzing.  However, pre-scientific belief systems fail to produce the verifiable, repeatable and predictive relationships (“conditional truth”) founding biology, chemistry, engineering, medicine, physics and science, so even impassioned contentions in their favor are rarely supported by plausible evidence.

We look forward to a time when more people and organizations join us in our defense of these “first freedoms,” and are proud to be a local voice of reason, defending the Constitution as a whole, and the first clause of the First Amendment in particular!  We respect – even defend – everyone’s right to religious freedom, and seek to remove religion from government, not society as a whole.   In these “interesting times” it is exciting and important to work to “protect and defend” the Consitution of the United States.  We welcome you to our site – and to our struggle to advance critical thinking, freethought, reason, science, understanding and interpersonal acceptance on a planet apparently increasingly threatened by exponential population growth, environmental degradation, religious absolutism, public corruption, illogical beliefs and aggressive war.

Thank you again,

Groff Schroeder President of the Board of Directors of the Freethinkers of Colorado Springs February 6, 2008
