October 17: Andrea Chalfin: Local News Director explains her adventures

10/17/2013 - 19:00

Andrea Chalfin

KRCC News Director

October 17
6:30 PM

315 East Cosilla
Colorado Springs

KRCC is a public Radio affiliate station in Colorado Springs (FM 91.5)  For years they mostly allowed college students to broadcast their favorite music. Then they took a big chance an bought into the National Public Radio news programs.  The local community loved it, paid to support it with contributions, and left most of the broadcast day still devoted to music.

A few years ago the community again asked the owner of the station, Colorado College, to add local news content.  So the College president chipped in a bucket of money, told the station to hire a staff and build a program, and get the community to support it with more contributions.

By all accounts it has been a big success. There is a wide ranging network of Colorado focused, largely volunteer but partly paid, news staffers who work with News Director Andrea Chalfin to produce lots of short stories, and many long pieces to help keep everyone informed about what is happening in Colorado.  The best part is that KRCC's local news presentations not run by a profit hungry corporation using a "if it bleeds it leads" scare tactic style of "journalism."

The meeting will officially start at 6:30 PM, but we have the room reserved from 6:00 PM on.  Drop in early if you like and chat with other early birds.
