Black Forest Animal Sanctuary Volunteer Day! Adults, Teens, Kids 6+

Saturday, June 4, 2016
10:00 AM - 2:00PM

Black Forest Animal Sanctuary
16750 Thompson Rd
Colorado Springs, CO

Pikes Peak Atheists are having a volunteer day at Black Forest Animal Sanctuary and we hope Freethinkers of Colorado Springs and others interested in volunteering will join us!

The Black Forest Animal Sanctuary (BFAS) is an all animal rescue and rehab group dedicated to helping those animals that are abused, neglected, or no longer wanted by their current owners. BFAS is completely made up of volunteers. BFAS deploys their animal rescue team during disasters and at law enforcement request. BFAS has a network of foster homes and farms.  Their website is www.bfasfarm.org

Everyone age 6 and over is welcome to volunteer! They will have a variety of tasks for various abilities and ages. This will be our 5th volunteer day for this great organization! The tasks that we have done for them so far have included everything from building fences to stall cleaning, skirting a trailer, building a dog pen, build other animal pens, kennel repairs, a massive reorganization of the storage warehouse, horse grooming and dog walking. In short, there will be plenty to do whether or not you want to work with animals while you are there.

In the past, the YOUNGER KIDS (ages 6-9) have mostly worked on socializing animals; meaning that they petted, groomed and played with kitties, bunnies and/or ponies depending on which animals were on hand and needed some love. Kids who are mature enough will also learn to clean goat pens, feed chickens and possibly collect eggs or groom horses. Please let your kid/s know in advance that this is a working, volunteer event and they will need to follow some rules for volunteer safety. A few parents will be in charge of the volunteering younger children and coaching them in how to help and how to behave around the animals.

Please SPREAD THE WORD about this event throughout our community! We encourage everyone to cross-post this among the various secular groups in our community so we can have a great turn-out and get this deserving charity some much needed help!!

Please BRING water, lunch and appropriate items for working outside (sunscreen, appropriate clothing for the expected weather, etc…). Sturdy close-toed shoes, long pants and work gloves are advised. Expect to get dirty. There are sticker bushes and tall grass present on the farm, so shorts are not advised.

Thank you for donating a few hours of your time to get out in our community and help this worthy cause! If you will need to leave earlier due to other commitments, we still want you to come and help!

LOCATION NOTE: As you turn off Hodgen Road onto Thompson, the Sanctuary is the entire area to your left (west) between Hodgen and Mountain Shadow View. The entrance is the gate that is close to Mountain Shadow View, and may not be labeled as Black Forest Animal Sanctuary as that sign was down the last time we were there. We will be there to open and shut the gate around the start of the event time. If you arrive late, just be sure to shut the gate behind you.

The Freethinkers of Colorado Springs thank the Pikes Peak Atheists for creating this event and inviting us!
