Cardiovascular Research on People

Monday June 12, 2017
The program starts at 6:30 PM with food and drinks served at 6:00 PM
Jack Quinn's in Downtown Colorado Springs

Summary:
Healthy cardiovascular control means that the heart and blood vessels are working together to ensure appropriate blood flow and blood pressure. Inappropriate cardiovascular control may lead to cardiovascular disease and acute events such as heart attack or loss of consciousness. My research focuses on how cold and hot temperatures can place a significant burden on the cardiovascular system. In cold environments this burden can be exacerbated with age and stiffening of the blood vessels leading to excessive increases in blood pressure. Hot environments can place individuals at greater risk of cardiovascular collapse if they experience excessive bleeding from wounds, increasing risk of mortality.

James Pearson Bio:
Dr. Pearson completed his PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology at Brunel University in England in 2010 under the supervision of Prof. José Gonzalez-Alonso. Dr. Pearson then went on to his first post-doctoral research fellowship at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where he studied thermal and vascular physiology under the guidance of Prof. Craig Crandall. After a second post-doctoral fellowship at Cardiff Metropolitan University studying arterial stiffness, Dr. Pearson moved to Colorado Springs in 2014 as a tenure track Assistant Professor at UCCS where he studies human cardiovascular control.
