Dome Rock Hike on Sunday, Oct. 3rd

10/03/2010 - 08:45

Hi Hiking Freethinkers,

Weather permitting, there will be a hike to Dome Rock on Sunday, October 3rd. This hike was suggested by Eric Cernyar who lives near there. He will be the trail guide for the hike. Georgianne and I will assist. A full description of the hike is below.

We will start from near Eric's house which is a shorter route – about 2.6 miles each way (5.2 miles total) – and involves only a single creek crossing each way. It is about a 1300 feet descent to Dome Rock, and a 1300 foot ascent back to the starting point. This route follows the “Spring Creek Trail,” which is on some trail maps.
If some people prefer, Eric could also lead people up to the top of Dome Rock by following the ridge line immediately north of the trail. That’s a lot of fun, but it is more strenuous. It is shy of being technical.

If going all the way to Dome Rock & back is too strenuous, some could just go to the officially-named “War Party Overlook.” The climb is onto a granite dome rock (not Dome Rock), with a beautiful overlook. The backside of Dome Rock and several other granite structures are visible from this overlook. The total elevation climb would be about 450 feet: and 1.4 miles each way.

Off site parking. Due to the limited parking and the distance to Eric's home (a little over 1 hour drive), we will meet off site and carpool to the Eric's home. Please meet me at the parking lot northwest of the intersection of Highway 24 and 21st Street before 8:45 AM Sunday morning. From Highway 24 and 21st Street, go north on 21st Street, take the first left turn onto Naegele Rd and then the first right turn into the parking lot. We will be leaving the parking lot PROMPTLY at 8:45 AM.

Please bring enough water and snacks for the hike.

Due to the number of people on the hike, please let me know if you plan on attending the hike. If you change your mind, please let her know that also.
