Drinking Skeptically in Colorado Springs
Submitted by charles.wallace on Wed, 01/13/2010 - 21:32.The Pikes Peak Skeptics Society is holding their monthly Drinking Skeptically event.
Drinking Skeptically is an informal social event designed to promote fellowship and networking among skeptics, critical-thinkers, and like-minded individuals.
Drinking Skeptically provides an opportunity for skeptics to talk, share ideas (and yes, drink) in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. Most of all this event is about having fun.
Everyone is welcome even if you do not drink.

The Colorado Springs Skeptics present: "Homeopathy: Medicine or Magic?"
Submitted by ftcsadmin on Fri, 04/10/2009 - 15:14.The Colorado Springs Skeptics invite you to their April monthly meeting.
Homeopathy is a billion dollar industry worldwide. While the highest sales for homeopathic remedies are in France, the sales in the United States continue to grow. Homeopathy is a great example of how alternative medicine differs from that of conventional medicine. The criticisms of homeopathy apply to other alternative health treatments as well – including Reiki, magnetic therapy, therapeutic touch, and acupuncture.
This month we will get a preview of John. R.'s Skepticamp talk: "Homeopathy: Medicine or Magic." What exactly is homeopathy? Does it have any basis in science? Is it effective? Why is its use becoming more accepted?

March Meeting: "The Enemies of Reason"
Submitted by ftcsadmin2 on Wed, 03/04/2009 - 12:54.Join us in watching part of the television documentary, "The Enemies of Reason: The Irrational Health Service," written and presented by Richard Dawkins. The documentary was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK in 2007. If time permits the uncut interviews with Deepak Chopra and homeopath Dr. Peter Fisher will be included. Dawkins is critical of alternative medicine because it fails to meet the objective and statistical rigor that is required for conventional, scientifically based treatments. Homeopathy is a perfect example. In the United Kingdom the National Health Service uses taxpayers dollars to fund homeopathy despite there being no scientific rational for its use or any demonstrable effect on health beyond that of the placebo effect. Afterwards, there will be an open discussion. Freethinkers strive to base their beliefs upon facts, logic, and scientific inquiry. This applies to all areas of life, not just to religion. What is the best way of promoting rational thinking? Are the outspoken, and sometimes confrontational, methods of Richard Dawkins, PZ Myers, Christopher Hitchens, and James Randi the best ways to promote critical thinking of both pseudoscience and religion? Or should religious faith be treated differently?
